Structural Steel
In Birmingham.

Steel beams, columns and connection assemblies for extensions, alterations and commercial structures. Start with the engineer’s design, then resolve the detail that makes fabrication and installation practical.

Steelwork That Fits The Design

Structural steel fabrication turns an engineer’s calculations and drawings into components ready for assembly. Typical enquiries include beams for new openings, columns, goalpost frames, supporting steel for extensions and secondary framing for commercial premises. The design must describe the load path, member sizes and connections before cutting begins.

A beam size alone is not a fabrication specification. Bearing arrangements, end plates, bolt positions, stiffeners and the supporting structure all matter. Tell us whether your drawings are preliminary, issued for pricing or approved for construction so the quotation can state the right assumptions.

When To Involve A Fabricator

Bring the fabrication enquiry forward when an architect or structural engineer has defined the proposed arrangement. Early discussion can identify awkward delivery routes, connection access and whether a frame can be broken into transportable assemblies. For alterations, existing dimensions need checking rather than relying entirely on historic drawings.

Do not remove a wall or other support before a competent designer has addressed temporary support and the construction sequence. Fabrication, structural design and installation are different parts of the job. Your quotation should identify who is responsible for each part and who approves changes.

Specification And Product Marking

For structural components within its scope, BS EN 1090-1 concerns conformity assessment, while BS EN 1090-2 sets execution requirements for steel structures. The designer should specify the execution class and the project requirements. Confirm the selected fabricator’s capability and documentation against that specification before ordering.

Current government guidance accepts CE or UKCA marking for construction products in Great Britain under the applicable route. Ask for the relevant Declaration of Performance and traceability information where required. A website statement is not evidence of certification for your particular supplier or order.

Connections, Finishes And Site Interfaces

Agree whether exposed steel is to remain visible, be boxed in or receive a specified protective system. Primer, corrosion protection and fire protection perform different functions. Fire resistance is a design requirement to be resolved with the project team, rather than inferred from the presence of paint.

Check the installation interfaces before manufacture. These include padstones, holding-down bolts, floor levels and clearance for tightening connections. If the existing building differs from the drawing, refer the discrepancy to the designer and obtain an agreed revision rather than altering a critical connection informally.

A Clear Process From Brief To Handover

Start with the intended use and a drawing that identifies the current revision. Include quantities, the project postcode and a realistic description of the access route. If dimensions are provisional, mark them clearly so they are not mistaken for instructions ready for manufacture.

Agree who provides the design and who checks site measurements. Material grade, finish, fixing positions and critical dimensions need to be settled before the job is released. A change to one component may also affect another supplier, so communicate revisions to everyone who uses the information.

Fabrication should follow the approved detail, with the inspection requirements planned into the job. Agree whether a first-off component, trial assembly or dimensional record is needed. It is easier to check a critical feature before finishing than to discover a mismatch at delivery.

Confirm packaging, identification and unloading arrangements before despatch. The person receiving the goods should be able to match each component to the drawing or order. Installation, lifting and any temporary works need their own agreed responsibilities and method.

What Affects Cost And Programme

Material, quantity and manufacturing complexity all influence the quotation. Cutting, drilling, forming and joining can involve setup work that is similar for a single part and a small batch. Tell us whether more parts may be needed later, without assuming a future order will carry the same price.

Protective finishes, inspection records and delivery can add separate stages. Ask what is included in the written scope and compare quotations against the same drawing revision. Engineering, site measurement, lifting and installation should be listed explicitly when they form part of the order.

The programme depends on approved information, available material, manufacturing capacity and any finishing process. Provide your required site date early and discuss whether a staged delivery is useful. Changes after approval can affect both workshop work and the delivery plan.

For work that interfaces with another component, identify which dimensions control fit and how those dimensions will be verified. A tolerance should be related to function rather than copied across every feature. Agree any proposed change before it reaches production.

THE PRACTICAL DETAILS

Questions, Answered

Do Structural Beams Need An Engineer?

Structural beams need an appropriate structural design that addresses loads, bearings, connections and the existing building. A fabricator should not select a beam purely from the opening width. Ask your project designer to confirm responsibility for calculations and temporary support, then provide the agreed design with your enquiry for fabrication.

Is CE Marking Still Accepted For Structural Steel?

CE marking remains recognised for construction products in Great Britain under current government guidance. UKCA marking is also available through the relevant route. For structural steelwork within scope, ask the chosen supplier for the applicable documentation and check it against the project specification. Confirm current requirements when placing your order.
