Sheet Metal Fabrication
In Birmingham.

Folded panels, covers, enclosures and trays for commercial and industrial use. Clear details on thickness, bend geometry and fixing points help turn a sheet-metal idea into a part that fits.

Cut, Fold And Assemble

Sheet metal fabrication starts with flat material and uses cutting, punching, folding and joining to form a component. Common enquiries include equipment covers, access panels, drip trays, duct-related components and small enclosures. The correct production route depends on geometry, material thickness, finish and quantity.

A folded panel is more than a flat outline with bend lines. Bend radii, material direction and the space needed for tooling affect what can be made. Identify the finished dimensions and the surfaces that must align so the fabricator can develop a suitable flat pattern.

Useful Files And Design Details

Send a dimensioned PDF drawing for review and a CAD file if one is available. State the revision and units. A DXF profile alone may not communicate folds, countersinks, welds or finish requirements, so include a finished-part view and notes covering features that affect assembly.

For enclosures, describe doors, removable panels, cable entries and ventilation requirements. If an ingress-protection rating is needed, state it at enquiry stage and agree how it will be demonstrated. A folded and welded box should not be described as weatherproof without an appropriate design and verification.

Thickness, Bends And Surface Finish

Sheet thickness affects stiffness, weight, bend behaviour and the practical size of unsupported panels. Adding a return fold or stiffening feature may be more useful than increasing thickness across the whole part. Any changes should be reviewed against the assembly and agreed before production.

Specify which faces are visible and whether scratches or weld witness marks would be unacceptable. Protective film, brushed direction and packaging can matter for finished stainless panels. Powder coating needs allowance at close-fitting interfaces and suitable preparation of the underlying metal before the coating is applied.

Safe Edges And Relevant Requirements

Edges and corners should be detailed for the way the part will be handled, installed and used. State where deburring, edge returns or protected corners are needed. Access panels should be designed so removal does not expose users to an uncontrolled hazard or leave a heavy panel unsupported.

PUWER applies to work equipment and may be relevant where a fabricated panel becomes part of a machine guard. COSHH controls are relevant to welding and finishing hazards during manufacture. Structural product rules depend on the component’s intended use, rather than its description as sheet metal.

A Clear Process From Brief To Handover

Start with the intended use and a drawing that identifies the current revision. Include quantities, the project postcode and a realistic description of the access route. If dimensions are provisional, mark them clearly so they are not mistaken for instructions ready for manufacture.

Agree who provides the design and who checks site measurements. Material grade, finish, fixing positions and critical dimensions need to be settled before the job is released. A change to one component may also affect another supplier, so communicate revisions to everyone who uses the information.

Fabrication should follow the approved detail, with the inspection requirements planned into the job. Agree whether a first-off component, trial assembly or dimensional record is needed. It is easier to check a critical feature before finishing than to discover a mismatch at delivery.

Confirm packaging, identification and unloading arrangements before despatch. The person receiving the goods should be able to match each component to the drawing or order. Installation, lifting and any temporary works need their own agreed responsibilities and method.

What Affects Cost And Programme

Material, quantity and manufacturing complexity all influence the quotation. Cutting, drilling, forming and joining can involve setup work that is similar for a single part and a small batch. Tell us whether more parts may be needed later, without assuming a future order will carry the same price.

Protective finishes, inspection records and delivery can add separate stages. Ask what is included in the written scope and compare quotations against the same drawing revision. Engineering, site measurement, lifting and installation should be listed explicitly when they form part of the order.

The programme depends on approved information, available material, manufacturing capacity and any finishing process. Provide your required site date early and discuss whether a staged delivery is useful. Changes after approval can affect both workshop work and the delivery plan.

For work that interfaces with another component, identify which dimensions control fit and how those dimensions will be verified. A tolerance should be related to function rather than copied across every feature. Agree any proposed change before it reaches production.

THE PRACTICAL DETAILS

Questions, Answered

Can You Work From A DXF File?

Sheet metal fabrication can use a DXF cutting profile, but the file needs supporting information. Include material grade, thickness, quantity and a dimensioned drawing showing the finished part. For folded items, confirm whether the file represents an agreed flat pattern or a starting profile that needs development before cutting.

What Tolerances Can I Request?

Sheet metal tolerances should relate to the features that control fit and function. State the important dimensions on the drawing rather than expecting one tolerance to suit every cut and bend. Material, thickness, bend sequence and part size influence what is practical, so proposed tolerances need agreement before manufacture starts.
