STEEL FABRICATION / BIRMINGHAMLet’s talk about your project
BEFORE YOU ORDER

The Questions
Behind Good Steelwork.

Practical answers about drawings, structural steel, materials, welding and project scope. Use these to prepare a clearer enquiry.

Can You Work From A Sketch?

A sketch can start a steelwork enquiry when it shows the intended layout and key dimensions. Photographs of the installation location are helpful too. Safety-critical work still needs an appropriate design and approved fabrication details. Make clear which measurements have been checked and which are estimates so assumptions can be recorded.

Is Installation Included In A Fabrication Quote?

Installation is included in a fabrication quote only when the written scope says so. Supply-only, delivery and installation are separate arrangements that should be clear before ordering. Discuss lifting, temporary support, access equipment and site responsibilities. The project team should coordinate construction activities and confirm who controls the work area.

Do Structural Beams Need An Engineer?

Structural beams need an appropriate structural design that addresses loads, bearings, connections and the existing building. A fabricator should not select a beam purely from the opening width. Ask your project designer to confirm responsibility for calculations and temporary support, then provide the agreed design with your enquiry for fabrication.

Is CE Marking Still Accepted For Structural Steel?

CE marking remains recognised for construction products in Great Britain under current government guidance. UKCA marking is also available through the relevant route. For structural steelwork within scope, ask the chosen supplier for the applicable documentation and check it against the project specification. Confirm current requirements when placing your order.

Can I Request A Single Component?

A single component can be assessed alongside larger fabrication enquiries. State whether you need one part, a prototype or an initial item before a repeat batch. Set-up, material availability and finishing can influence whether the job is practical. Include the same dimensional and material information you would supply for a larger order.

Can You Include A Protective Finish?

A protective finish can be included in the enquiry scope once exposure and appearance are understood. Primer, galvanizing, powder coating and fire protection have different purposes and preparation requirements. State the required system if specified. Agree whether finishing, transport protection and any touch-up after installation are included in the quotation.

Can You Work From A DXF File?

Sheet metal fabrication can use a DXF cutting profile, but the file needs supporting information. Include material grade, thickness, quantity and a dimensioned drawing showing the finished part. For folded items, confirm whether the file represents an agreed flat pattern or a starting profile that needs development before cutting.

What Tolerances Can I Request?

Sheet metal tolerances should relate to the features that control fit and function. State the important dimensions on the drawing rather than expecting one tolerance to suit every cut and bend. Material, thickness, bend sequence and part size influence what is practical, so proposed tolerances need agreement before manufacture starts.

Can You Turn An Idea Into A Fabrication Brief?

Bespoke steel fabrication can begin with an idea, reference image or rough sketch. The next step is to define the purpose, dimensions, material and connections in an agreed drawing. Where the item supports loads or provides guarding, the relevant designer must confirm its performance requirements before manufacture is authorised.

How Long Does Steel Fabrication Take?

Steel fabrication lead time depends on design approval, material availability, production workload, finishing and the proposed delivery sequence. There is no useful universal timescale for every component. Supply your required site date early and ask for a programme tied to drawing approval. Confirm changes before relying on a delivery date.

Can Damaged Steel Be Welded Rather Than Replaced?

Damaged steel may be suitable for welding after the material, failure cause and structural duty have been assessed. A crack should not simply be covered with a fresh weld. Supply photographs and explain how the item is used. Safety-critical repairs may require a designer’s assessment before the repair method is agreed.

What Does Coded Welding Mean?

Coded welding usually refers to a welder qualified within a particular test standard and range. It is not a universal approval for every material, thickness, process or position. Ask which qualification applies, whether it is valid for the proposed joint and what welding procedure and inspection requirements the project specification calls for.
